When the Bible says that we are not under the law, it's talking about the law of sin, not the commandments, the commandments are still righteous. We are under grace meaning that God gives us his Spirit to enable us to be able to obey the commandments.
There were so many commandments in the law because there were so many people and each commandment dealt with the sin of that particular person. The law deals with every sin there is, but not everyone struggles with all the sins in the Law, but maybe one, two or a few, so what grace does is allow us to live above the sin in the Law that we struggled with. Living above sin is to not live in sin, but be able to live without committing that sin through the grace (favor, enablement) of God. By grace we can live above sin, above the law of sin and live in, through and by the law of grace, which is the favor (enablement) of God.
