When Jesus taught about the people saying haven't we prophesied in your name and done many wonderful works in your name, etc., it's because these are works of righteousness, and works of righteousness don't get you into heaven, but Jesus said that you would know that we're his by our fruit, this fruit is the fruit of the Spirit, the grace of God, this is why Paul said grow in grace, because we all fall short of the glory of God, and as Christians, when we first become saved, we don't start off with all the characteristics of the fruit of the Spirit (which is the character of Christ: make disciples of all nations), but we have to grow into the full measure and stature of Christ (his characteristics, the fruit of the Spirit, which is perfection, because there is no laws against them).
