living a righteous life isn't a work, it's our reasonable service to God and the more we seek after God's righteousness, the more he will give us the ability to live righteous. Christ died to make his righteousness available to us through receiving the Holy Ghost, which is his Spirit. Without his Spirit we can't live righteous. We may stumble into righteousness sometimes, but without his Spirit/Ghost, we won't be able to live consistently righteous. One of the apostles said "until Christ be formed in you", so sometimes people don't receive the Holy Ghost right away when they first start following Christ, it may be a process, but the Bible says "he that started a good work in you shall finish it until the day of Christ", which also shows that it's not us doing the work of trying to live righteous, but it's Christ living in us making us more like him each day, which is righteous.
